      Hi Campbell.

Two possible reasons. Firstly, they do protect our fingers which contain lots of nerve endings. Secondly, its down to evolution. Nails have evolved form talons or claws or hooves, which we don’t need due to how we live, so that have evolved to be small and quite insignificant.
