Well I have not done that yet – but I have found out why gum disease causes bone loss and am working on treatments to stop that happening. When you get a result that means you’ve taken a huge step to developing a new treatment then its probably like scoring a goal or winning the gold medal – a huge sense of acheivement
I’d love to know, but it hasn’t happened to me yet. You might want to read more about the people who have, like:
– Alexander Flemming and Howard Florey (for penicillin, probably the most important antibiotic ever discovered)
However, mostly, each scientist makes only a small contribution to finding new medicines – it tends to happen when teams of scientists work together, each doing a small part. So, teamwork is very important in science.
