      Hi Dogs

I tend to be pretty smart as my lab is in the Dental Hospital so all my clinical colleagues have to be smart and there are lots of members of the public around in the clinics. Usually wear shirts and trousers but never a tie!!!

In the lab I wear a lab coat, and when I am visiting my colleagues in Stockholm in Sweden where they grow embryonic stem cells I have to wear purple plastic covers on my shoes and a hair net on my head

I’m going to cheat for this one and copy/paste “my typical day”. I wrote it the first time, honest!

“A typical day involves a mix of teaching, research and administration (not necessarily in that order!). After dropping the children at school, I come to work on a train, when I might read a research paper and make some notes. At the University, I might spend an hour talking with a small group (15) of medical students about how to treat high blood pressure, followed by a one-to-one meeting with one of the research students in my lab, discussing their work, what they’ve done, what they intend to do, and why! In the early afternoon, I might work at writing a research paper, usually sitting at a computer; these research papers are one very important way that we communicate our experiments and ideas to other scientists my. I’ll have to cross-reference a lot of the work of others, and I can’t remember it all, so I’ll have to refer to sets of notes I’ve made and go back to the original descriptions of work. Later, I might work on a grant application; these grant are needed to fund our experimental work. This involves some thinking about science, but a lot of work like contacting suppliers for quotes, seeking approval from the University to use some special equipment, seeking ethical review and approval, and hence plenty of paperwork. At the end of the day, I get to go home for bed time … reading stories to or with our 2 children! Other days I might dedicate entirely to doing experiments, or setting and marking exam papers; so, every day is different.

      Hi Dogs,
With me it depends on what (and where!) I am working. Normally in the day to day office I have BLOODHOUND team clothes – polo shirts and shirts with logos and sponsors on them. Whenever I am in the workshop though I tend to wear overalls, or when manning an event it is smart shirt with trousers and shoes! I must admit that it is nice here in the office, dark jeans are normally fine, and now that it is getting hot I may even get to wear shorts!

Do you mean what do I wear? Generally I wear what I like – jeans, anything from Fat Face, pumps or trainers. If I’m lecturing I try and look a bit smarter, and if I’m working in the clean room I have to put this blue nylon suit over my clothes with a hood and boots as well. It’s so that fibres from my clothes and hair doesn’t contaminate the lab or my work.

There is no uniform or dress code for the job I have now – as long as I look tidy that’s fine. One of my previous jobs involved working with molten metal – I had to wear a woollen safety suit for that. For another job I used to work in a clean room – so I had to wear a full bunny suit with face mask and little bootees made out of a material that looks like carrier bags!
