Well, there are noise-cancelling headphones … there are “ototoxic” drugs that kill your hearing (although they’re not really recommended, because you can’t get your hearing back), you could encourage your friend to learn sign language (its a really expressive way to communicate!), or you could put on a space suit, suck all the air out of the room … and you won’t hear a thing!
Another idea (don’t take this one seriously; to do this would be an assault …):
– Inhaled lidocaine will do the trick. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic, and when inhaled can paralyse the vocal cords. So, inhaling a lidocaine mist can produce a temporarily hoarse voice. There are a few other drugs that will do the same thing, but I think that a list would be unhelpful!
