Identifying alternatives to using fossil fuels is relatively easy – we know that we can get energy from the sun, wind, wave, tides and plants. However, we don’t have control over when most of these will give us energy and we’re very used to being able to switch things on and off when it suits us! These techniques are also more expensive than using fossil fuels, and we don’t have the right sort of grid for them.
Really the tricky part is finding ways for these alternatives to support us in a comfortable life style (e.g. so that the telly doesn’t switch off because a cloud got between us and the sun!). That involves ways of introducing storage while making them cheaper and more efficient.
