The major aim of our work is to understand how bone and other hard tissues like teeth repair naturally and then try to tap into those processes to speed them up or improve and control them so we can develop new treatments for patients. We are also interested in understanding how inflammation caused by bacterial infection can cause bone loss in diseases like gum disease and osteomyeltits.
Bone contains lots of very active proteins that can attract stem cells to a fracture and tells them to make more bone. If we know how that happens and what controls it we can use it as a template for new methods to fix fractures.
