This is a question that many psychologists investigate, and it seems that subtle changes can influence behavior. For examle, changing the colour of the walls or the background music might change buying behaviour in shops. So, “controlling” is too strong a term, but influencing – yes.
Just an aside- some mental illnesses in young people first come on when they think that they are being controlled externally, by other people or beings; such problems can be treated by psychiatrists.
