Hi Dyson. I do have a family. My wife is a local doctor (GP) and my two boys are aged 7 and 3. I get home in the evening to have dinner with them all and then can read bedtime stories to the boys before I start work in the evening so I see alot of them. Although I can be away a fair bit, and they do miss me, I make sure weekends and holidays are for the family
Yes, I have a wife and two children, so I have less time now to do science than I used to. I have the advantage that my wife is very good at maths and physics, so this an interest we can enjoy together. Also, my children get to have fun with fysics (yes, you can groan 😉 ) at home (in small doses!). The other way we manage things during the week is to leave work at a reasonable time, spend some time at home in the evening with the family and then do some computer work for a couple of hours in the evening.
Hi
I have a husband and he is very patient with me on occasions when I work from home or get home late. He works for an electronics company and sometimes he has to work late too, so he understands.
I have a husband who likes me home on time to cook his dinner (only joking – we take it in turns).
I don’t work particularly long hours at all – I have so much I do outside of work (I may a lecturer by now if I did work longer hours though!) For example, my husband and I were both at a band practice last night – he played electric guitar and I played keyboard and helped someone on the drums.
When I was writing up my PhD I worked evenings and Saturdays for about 6 months – that was exhausting but sometimes you’ve just gotta put the hours in to acheive your goals.
